Ayres joined the Marine Corps in July of 1944, trained at Parris Island and Camp Lejeune, and then traveled across the country with the 59th Replacement Draft.
On 1 May 1945, Private Ayers was transferred to the 24th Marine Regiment, and became a mortarman with Company A. He trained with them for the invasion of Japan, but the war ended before he had a chance to see combat. After the war, he served for twelve months with Headquarters & Service Company, 18th Service Battalion before transferring to the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
Ayers was discharged as a Private First Class in June 1947.
