William Allen was the youngest child of William C. and Maggie Allen; he grew up on the family farm in Sandy Ridge, Georgia, not far from Covington. He was inducted into the Marine Corps in June, 1944, and trained at Parris Island and Camp Lejeune before joining the 30th Replacement Draft.
Private Allen’s unit shipped out for Iwo Jima; he spent five days performing odd jobs on the beach before being assigned to Baker Company, 24th Marines as a rifleman. He was only with his new comrades for a few days before he was seriously wounded and evacuated. Allen would spend the rest of the war in hospitals from Hawaii to South Carolina. He was finally discharged for disability on January 5, 1946, the day he was promoted to Private First Class.
Allen died in 1992, and is buried in Lawnwood Memorial Park, Covington.
