Boot camp at Parris Island with First Recruit Battalion. Retained at depot as a recruit instructor through August 1943.

Joined Charlie Company, First Battalion, 24th Marines at Camp Pendleton on 1 September 1943.

Campaign Narrative

Saipan – Tinian (Rear Echelon, Camp Maui)

McAdoo was admitted to the 22nd Station Hospital at Makawao, Maui, on 9 May 1944 as his regiment was embarking for Operation Forager; the fleet departed before he was released on 18 May. He was assigned to the rear echelon and did not participate in the campaigns for Saipan or Tinian.

Iwo Jima

Important Events:
February 21, 1945 – wounded in action (intracranial injury, skull fracture); evacuated to USS Logan.

February 22, 1945 – died of wounds aboard USS Logan. Buried at sea; given location 24°57’N – 144°33’E. (Note: these coordinates are approximately 215 miles from Iwo Jima. As Logan remained in the operation area until 28 February, the location may be incorrect.)

    Parents are George (1896-1965) and Pauline McAdoo (1897-1941). Third born of eight children. Siblings are Olin – 4 years older, Paul – 1 years older, Edwin – 2 years younger, Marian – 4 years younger, Andrea – 8 years younger, Allena – 10 years younger, Pauline – 11 years younger. Corporal McAdoo’s mother died when he was a senior in high school. Worked at Tuttle and Bailey in New Britain prior to the service.

    Died of wounds received in action at Iwo Jima. Also fought on Roi-Namur, Saipan, and Tinian. Buried at sea at latitude 24° -57N, longitude 141° -44 E. Awarded the Purple Heart Medal.
