Service & Campaigns
Boot camp at Parris Island; outposted to H&S Battery, Anti-aircraft artillery group, Third Defense Battalion at Parris Island. Duty with Third, Fourth, Fifth, and Eleventh Defense Battalions through July 1942; advanced in rating to Assistant Cook.
On 1 October 1942, reported as AWOL from 155mm Artillery Group, Eleventh Defense Battalion. Apprehended early 1943 and charged with desertion in time of war. Confined at Camp Lejeune, NC, through 6 July 1943, at which time transferred to Naval Prison Portsmouth, NH, as General Court Martial Prisoner.
Confined at NP Portsmouth through spring of 1944; released on probation. Transferred to 65th Replacement Draft at Camp Lejeune for transit overseas.
Joined Able Company, First Battalion, 24th Marines at Camp Maui on 18 September 1944
