Everett Schafer's Letters

Letter #11
Combat Routine Is Like Anything Else, Only More So

To “Mom & All”
17 July 1944

July 17 1944
Dear Mother + family

I received your letter that was written during the Sunday rest hours. I received it on a Sunday and that’s what I was doing, sleeping.

By the time you receive this letter you should have the V-mail I sent.

Saipan was secured July ninth but there are still a few loose Japs running around at night and hiding by day, but they are getting less and less.[1]

That was a very nice letter and if I needed anything I would let you know. We are well supplied while in combat and any extra things are either unnecessary or too heavy to carry. We travel light as possible so we can go farther.

Combat routine is like anything else only more so. We move and take ground during the day and dig in and watch by night.

Now things around here are different. We get three hot meals a day, no moving and sleep all night. The band brought their instruments and now we have music. So you see you don’t need to worry about me.[2]

I have received I believe all of your letters up to date. I may get the package you sent, I hope so. I received Joan’s letter and she was really thrilled with her formal. She and Ronny must really be getting tall. I’ll hardly know them when I get back. I’m sure glad Ronny is getting better in health, and also his school work.

I like the idea of selling the house and I hope you get a nice modern place now, and not too big for it isn’t necessary, only extra work and money.

I’m running out of things to say so will close for now. With lots of love to all.

Your loving son
Everett

Footnotes

1. Although the island has been secured and First Battalion has completed their mopping-up mission, the occasional Japanese straggler would appear in their camp, usually looking for food or water.
2. The operations order outlining the invasion of Tinian was released on July 17; either Everett has not yet heard the news, or he is deliberately avoiding the topic.
